Historical context

This gold tremissis was produced under the authority of Leo I at the mint of Constantinople in the eastern Roman Empire.

The denomination was introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by the Emperor Theodosius I as a small pure gold coin valued at a third of a solidus, its name formed by analogy with the semissis. Initially weighing eight siliquae, tremisses were commonly minted in the Roman Empire into the eighth century. This piece features an obverse portrait of Verina with the legend "AEL (rev.U)ERI-NA AVG", while the reverse displays a cross within a wreath.
