Historical context

Leo I, also known as the Thracian or the Great, ruled as Eastern Roman emperor from 457 to 474. Originating from Dacia Aureliana near historic Thrace, his seventeen-year reign was marked by ambitious political and military plans to aid the Western Roman Empire. This bronze coinage was minted at Cyzicus, an ancient Greek town in Mysia in Anatolia, located on the shoreward side of the Kapıdağ Peninsula.
