Historical context

Leo I, a native of Dacia Aureliana near historic Thrace, served as Eastern Roman emperor from 457 to 474. His 17-year reign involved efforts to assist the faltering Western Roman Empire, which had moved its court to the northern Italian city of Ravenna in 401. This solidus, a pure gold coin originally introduced in the early 4th century, was struck at the western imperial capital of Ravenna in AD 457.
