Historical context

This gold solidus was struck in AD 457 at Mediolanum, an important Roman city in northern Italy that had served as an informal capital of the Western Roman Empire. The solidus had been introduced in the early 4th century as a highly pure gold coin of the Later Roman Empire. The issue bears the name and portrait of Leo I, who ruled as Eastern Roman emperor from 457 to 474 and pursued political and military efforts aimed at assisting the faltering Western Roman Empire.
