Historical context
Leo I, also known as the Thracian, served as Eastern Roman emperor from 457 to 474. Across his 17-year reign, he directed ambitious military and political efforts towards aiding the faltering Western Roman Empire. This coin, struck in Rome between AD 465 and AD 467, is a solidus, a highly pure gold denomination introduced in the early 4th century to replace the aureus.
