Historical context
Leo I, also known as the Thracian or Leo the Great, was Eastern Roman emperor from 457 to 474. Born in Dacia Aureliana near historic Thrace, he pursued ambitious political and military plans over his seventeen-year rule, which were largely focused on aiding the faltering Western Roman Empire. This gold semissis was struck under his name between AD 465 and AD 467 at the mint of Rome in the Western empire.
