Historical context

Libius Severus reigned as Western Roman emperor from 19 November 461 until his death on 14 November 465. A native of Lucania, he attained the throne following the overthrow of Majorian by the magister militum Ricimer, upon whom Severus was highly dependent during his rule of just under four years. This silver half siliqua, minted at Rome, represents a denomination related to the siliqua, a thin Roman silver coin produced from the 4th century onwards.
