Historical context

Libius Severus reigned as Western Roman emperor from 19 November 461 until his death on 14 November 465. He was elevated after the deposition of Majorian by the magister militum Ricimer, who held most of the de facto power during his four-year rule. This gold solidus was minted under Severus between AD 461 and AD 465 at Ravenna, which served as the capital city of the Western Roman Empire throughout much of the fifth century.
