Historical context

Majorian was Western Roman emperor from 457 to 461, taking power after deposing Avitus alongside Ricimer at the Battle of Placentia. Throughout his brief reign, he campaigned across Gaul and Hispania to recover territory from the Visigoths, Burgundians and Vandals, while attempting political reforms until Ricimer orchestrated his murder in 461. This gold tremissis was minted at Ravenna between AD 457 and AD 461. Originally introduced into Roman currency during the 380s by Theodosius I, the tremissis represented one third of a solidus.
