Historical context

Marcian was Roman emperor of the East from 450 to 457, having been elevated following the death of Emperor Theodosius II and his subsequent marriage to Theodosius's sister Pulcheria. During his reign, Marcian reversed earlier policies toward the Huns, ending subsidy payments to Attila and defeating Hunnic forces in their heartland across the Danube in 452. This bronze coin was struck under Marcian at Nicomedia, an ancient city that had served as an eastern capital of the Roman Empire under Diocletian.
