Historical context

Marcian was elected and inaugurated as Eastern Roman emperor in August 450 following the death of Theodosius II and marriage to Theodosius's sister Pulcheria. During his rule from 450 to 457, he ended subsidy payments to Attila and settled Germanic tribes as foederati. This bronze coin was struck under his authority at Antioch in Syria, an ancient provincial capital founded in 300 BC on the Orontes River that ranked among the largest cities in the Roman Empire.
