Historical context

Marcian served as Roman emperor of the East from 450 to 457, having been elevated to the throne after the death of Theodosius II and his subsequent marriage to Pulcheria. During his reign, he ended imperial subsidies to Attila, launched campaigns against the Huns in 452, and convened the Council of Chalcedon. This gold tremissis was struck at Mediolanum in AD 455.
