Siliqua in silver struck at Barcino under Maximus of Barcelona, AD 410–AD 411, catalogued as RIC X Maximus of Barcelona 1601. Obverse: Bust of Maximus, bearded, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right.

Historical context

Maximus was a Roman usurper in Hispania who was declared emperor during the Roman Civil war of 407–415 by the general Gerontius. Struck at the mint of Barcino between AD 410 and AD 411, this coin belongs to the siliqua denomination, a term used since the 19th century for thin Roman silver coins produced from the 4th century onwards. The denomination was numismatically tied to a unit of weight reckoned as one twenty-fourth of a gold solidus.
