Historical context
Odoacer, also spelled Odovacer or Odovacar, was an officer of non-Roman heritage in the Roman army who led a troop revolt that deposed the Western Roman emperor Romulus Augustulus on 4 September 476. Backed by the Roman Senate, he governed Italy from 476 to 493 AD, formally recognising the Eastern emperor Zeno while using the title of king. This bronze piece was struck at Ravenna in AD 477, a period during which Odoacer faced soldier unrest before establishing a stable administration.
