Historical context
Romulus Augustus, derisively known as Augustulus, ruled as Western Roman emperor from 31 October 475 to 4 September 476 after being installed by his father, the magister militum Orestes. Following the overthrow of Julius Nepos, Romulus served as a figurehead until the barbarian general Odoacer killed Orestes and deposed the young ruler. This gold solidus was produced at Mediolanum, an important northern Italian city that had previously served as capital of the Western Roman Empire under Emperor Maximian, during Romulus's ten-month reign.
