Historical context
Honorius was Roman emperor from 393 to 423, ruling the western half of the empire following the death of his father Theodosius I in 395. His nephew Theodosius II ruled the Eastern Empire as sole emperor after the death of Arcadius in 408. This gold solidus, a denomination introduced in the early 4th century to replace the aureus, was struck between AD 408 and AD 420 at the eastern capital of Constantinople, honouring the western ruler Honorius alongside reverse iconography celebrating Constantinopolis.
