Historical context

This gold solidus was produced at Constantinople under the authority of Theodosius II, who ruled as Roman emperor from 402 until 450. Proclaimed Augustus as an infant, Theodosius II ruled as sole emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire following the death of his father Arcadius in 408. His capital of Constantinople served as the mint for this imperial coinage.

Issued under Theodosius II, this piece honours Pulcheria, whose portrait on the obverse is accompanied by the legend "AEL PVLCH-ERIA AVG" and shows her crowned by the Hand of God.
