RIC X Theodosius II (East) 207. Denomination: Solidus. Authority: Theodosius II. Mint: Constantinople. The obverse shows bust of Theodosius, helmeted, pearl-diademed, cuirassed, spear pointing forward, shield with horseman and enemy motif, with the legend D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG.

The reverse shows roma, helmeted, draped, and Constantinopolis, helmeted, draped, enthroned, facing front, heads turned toward one another, holding sceptres in outer hands and supporting shield inscribed VOT/XV/MVL/XX between them; prow beneath right foot of Constantinopolis; star in left field, with the legend GLORIA - REI - PVBLICAE.

Historical context

Theodosius II ruled as Roman emperor from 402 to 450, governing as sole emperor of the Eastern Empire following the death of his father Arcadius in 408. This solidus—a standard gold coin introduced in the 4th century to replace the aureus—was minted at his capital of Constantinople. Founded on the site of Byzantium and established as the eastern capital in 330, Constantinople formed the administrative core of the empire, where Theodosius II undertook major defensive works including the Theodosian walls.
