Historical context

This solidus was issued under Theodosius II, who ruled as Roman emperor from 402 to 450. Proclaimed Augustus as an infant, he served as sole emperor of the Eastern Empire following the death of his father Arcadius in 408. His reign in Constantinople was marked by the construction of the Theodosian walls, the founding of the University of Constantinople in 425, and the promulgation of the Theodosian law code.

The coin was struck at the mint of Constantinople. The obverse bears the emperor's name and title in the legend "D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG", while the reverse carries the inscription "FELICITER - N(rev.U)BTIIS" and depicts Theodosius II standing between Valentinian III and Eudoxia as they clasp hands.
