Historical context

Theodosius II ruled as Roman emperor from 402 until 450, having been proclaimed Augustus in infancy. Following the death of his father Arcadius in 408, he became the sole ruler of the Eastern Roman Empire. His reign in Constantinople was distinguished by major civic and administrative developments, including the construction of the Theodosian walls, the compilation of the Theodosian law code, and the establishment of the University of Constantinople.

The solidus served as a highly pure gold currency and the principal commercial gold coin of the Later Roman Empire. The obverse presents Theodosius II holding a spear and shield, identified by the legend "D N THEODOSI-VS•P•F•AVG". The reverse depicts the personification of Constantinopolis enthroned, bearing a sceptre and a cross on a globe, accompanied by the inscription "IMP.XXXXII˙COS• - XVII˙P˙P˙".
