Historical context

Theodosius II ruled as Roman emperor from 402 until 450, serving as sole emperor in the Eastern Roman Empire following the death of his father, Arcadius, in 408. His rule from Constantinople saw major developments in the capital, including the construction of the Theodosian walls and the establishment of the University of Constantinople in 425.

This gold tremissis was struck at the Constantinople mint under the authority of Theodosius II. Introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by Theodosius I, the tremissis took its name from its value of one third of a solidus and was regularly minted throughout late antiquity. The obverse depicts the bust of Eudoxia with the legend "AEL EVDO-XIA AVG", paired with a reverse showing a cross within a wreath.
