Historical context

Theodosius II ruled as Roman emperor from 402 to 450, serving as sole emperor in the East following the death of his father Arcadius in 408. This solidus—a highly pure gold denomination introduced in the early 4th century—was produced in AD 423 at Ravenna. Ravenna had become the capital of the Western Roman Empire after Emperor Honorius moved his court there from Mediolanum in 401, remaining the western capital for most of the fifth century.
