Solidus in gold struck at Aquileia under Theodosius II, AD 425, catalogued as RIC X Theodosius II (West) 1805. Obverse: Bust of Theodosius II, helmeted, pearl-diademed, cuirassed, facing front, holding spear in right hand behind head and shield decorated with horseman on left arm.

Reverse: Theodosius II and Valentinian III, wearing consular robes, standing front, holding mappa in right hand and cruciform sceptre in left hand; a star above and between them. Obverse legend: D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG. Reverse legend: SALVS REI - PVBLICAE.

Historical context

Theodosius II ruled as Roman emperor from 402 to 450, governing as the Eastern Empire's sole emperor following the death of his father Arcadius in 408. In 425, the year this gold solidus was struck, Theodosius II founded the University of Constantinople. The solidus had been introduced in the early 4th century as a highly pure gold coin of the Later Roman Empire. It was produced at Aquileia, a major Roman city in northeastern Italy founded originally in 181 BC.
