Historical context

This gold solidus was produced at Aquileia under the western authority of Theodosius II. Proclaimed Augustus as an infant in 402, Theodosius II became the sole emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire following the death of his father, Arcadius, in 408, and reigned until 450.

This issue features an obverse portrait of Galla Placidia crowned by the Hand of God with the legend "D N GALLA PLA-CIDIA P F AVG". The reverse depicts a winged Victory supporting a long jewelled cross beneath a star, accompanied by the votive inscription "VOT XX - MVLT XXX".
