Historical context
Valentinian III served as Roman emperor in the West from 425 to 455, beginning his reign in childhood after receiving the rank of caesar from Theodosius II. His mother, Galla Placidia, daughter of Theodosius I and former consort to Constantius III, wielded substantial influence and managed government administration as regent during his early rule. This solidus, produced at Ravenna between AD 426 and AD 430, reflects this period of regency, when the young emperor's authority was guided by his mother.
