Historical context

Valentinian III reigned as Roman emperor in the West from 425 to 455, having assumed power during childhood. His rule was marked by civil conflicts and invasions, during which figures such as his mother, the augusta Galla Placidia, and the general Flavius Aetius exercised significant influence. Valentinian was the last ruler of the Valentinianic dynasty and also a member of the Theodosian dynasty.

Struck at Ravenna, this gold solidus was produced as part of the Western Roman monetary system, in which the solidus served as the main gold coin of commerce from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. Introduced in the early fourth century to replace the aureus, the denomination retained high purity. The coin features the bust of Honoria on the obverse alongside the legend "D N IVST GRAT HO-NORIA P F AVG", while the reverse depicts a winged Victory supporting a jewelled cross with the legend "BONO REI - PVBLICAE".
