Historical context

Valentinian III, born Placidus Valentinianus, ruled as Western Roman emperor from 425 to 455. Taking the throne as a child of six, his lengthy reign was the last of the Valentinianic dynasty and unfolded amid civil conflicts and external invasions. Imperial affairs were heavily directed by his mother, Galla Placidia, and the military commander Flavius Aetius, who repelled invasions by Attila the Hun before Valentinian ultimately killed him.

Valued at one third of a solidus, the small pure gold coin initially weighed eight siliquae. The obverse presents the emperor with the imperial legend "D N PLA VALENTINIANVS P F AVG", while the reverse displays a cross positioned within a wreath.
