Historical context

Valentinian III was Roman emperor in the West from 425 to 455. The son of Galla Placidia and Constantius III, he was the last emperor of the Valentinianic dynasty and also a member of the Theodosian dynasty. Ascending the throne as a child of six, his lengthy rule saw continuous civil conflicts and external invasions, during which the western empire experienced an ongoing collapse.

This gold solidus was struck under Valentinian III at the mint of Ravenna. Introduced in the early fourth century as a replacement for the aureus, the solidus served as a highly pure gold coin and formed the principal gold denomination of commerce in Western Europe from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. The coin carries the obverse legend "D N PLA VALENTI-NIANVS P F AVG" and the reverse inscription "VOT X - MVLT XX".
