Historical context

Valentinian III reigned as Roman emperor in the West from 425 to 455, having been appointed caesar by Theodosius II before assuming the rank of augustus. His rule was marked by barbarian invasions, including repeated threats from Attila the Hun, and civil strife among military commanders such as Flavius Aetius, whom the emperor later killed before being assassinated himself.

Struck at Rome, this gold solidus represents the main denomination of commerce in Western Europe from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. The coin bears the obverse title "D N PLA VALENTI-NIANVS P F AVG" and features consular robes and insignia, while the reverse legend "VOT XXX - MVLT XXXX" accompanies a depiction of the emperor distributing coins to a kneeling figure.
