Historical context

Valentinian III was Roman emperor in the West from 425 to 455, having ascended the throne in childhood as the youngest sole emperor in the Western Roman Empire. His reign, one of the longest in the West, was marked by civil wars and barbarian invasions during the ongoing collapse of the western empire. Coins of his reign were struck at imperial mints including Rome and Ravenna.

This gold semissis features the obverse legend "D N PLA VALENTINIANVS P F AVG" accompanying the bust of the emperor. The reverse displays Victory seated on a cuirass beside a small winged genius, both supporting a shield inscribed with a christogram upon a low column, accompanied by the inscription "SALVS REI PVBLICAE".
