Historical context

Valentinian III, born Placidus Valentinianus, ruled as Western Roman emperor from 425 to 455. Ascending the throne in childhood as the youngest sole emperor in the Western Roman Empire, his reign was dominated by barbarian invasions and conflicts involving powerful generals. Influence was wielded by his mother Galla Placidia and the commander Flavius Aetius, until Valentinian killed Aetius and was subsequently assassinated by Aetius's bodyguards.

This gold tremissis was produced under Valentinian III at the mints of Rome and Ravenna. Introduced to Roman currency by Emperor Theodosius I in the 380s, the tremissis was a small denomination representing a third of a solidus. The obverse features the imperial bust paired with the legend "D N PLA VALENTINIANVS P F AVG", while the reverse displays a cross within a wreath with base ties XIIX.
