Historical context

Valentinian III reigned as Roman emperor in the West from 425 to 455, having assumed imperial power as a child. He was the son of Galla Placidia and Constantius III, belonging to both the Valentinianic and Theodosian dynasties. His prolonged rule in the Western Roman Empire was marked by barbarian invasions, internal conflict among military commanders, and the influential presence of his mother, Galla Placidia.

This gold tremissis was produced under the authority of Valentinian III at the mints of Ravenna or Rome. The tremissis was introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by Emperor Theodosius I as a denomination valued at one third of a solidus. Struck during Late Antiquity, this piece features the obverse legend "D N IVST GRAT HONORIA P F AVG" accompanying the bust of Honoria.
