Historical context

Valentinian III, born Placidus Valentinianus, ruled as Western Roman emperor from 425 until his assassination in 455. Raised to imperial office during his childhood at the age of six, he was the son of Galla Placidia and Constantius III. His lengthy reign over the Western Roman Empire was continually shaped by internal civil conflicts among powerful generals as well as major barbarian invasions.

Produced at the mint of Ravenna, this silver half siliqua carries the emperor's identity in the obverse legend "D N PLA VALENTINIANVS P F AVG", referencing his name and imperial titles. The reverse features an advancing winged Victory carrying a wreath and a palm branch, accompanied by the inscription "VICTOR-IA AVGGG".
