Historical context

Valentinian III was Roman emperor in the West from 425 to 455, having been made caesar by his co-emperor Theodosius II a year before becoming augustus. As the son of Galla Placidia and Constantius III, he was the last emperor of the Valentinianic dynasty. His reign was marked by civil wars and barbarian incursions, during which military commander Flavius Aetius defended the western empire against Germanic and Hunnic invasions. Aquileia, a major Roman city founded in 181 BC, produced this coinage before it became the first city in the Italian Peninsula sacked by Attila the Hun.
