Historical context

The Visigoths were a Gothic people who emerged in the Balkans during late antiquity, having entered the Roman Empire in 376. Following their sack of Rome under Alaric I in 410, they were settled as foederati in southern Gaul in 418, where they established a kingdom based at Toulouse before expanding across Hispania.

This gold solidus was produced by the Visigoths at an uncertain mint during the period of the Roman Empire. The solidus was introduced in the early fourth century as a highly pure gold coin that served as the primary gold currency of commerce in Western Europe from late Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. The coin bears the name and portrait of the emperor Valentinian III, featuring the obverse legend "D N PLA VALENTI-NIANVS P F AVG" and a reverse depicting the emperor holding a standard and Victory on a globe while spurning a bound captive, accompanied by the inscription "VICTORI-A AVGGG".
