Historical context

The Visigoths entered the Roman Empire in 376 and were settled as foederati in southern Gaul in 418, where they established a kingdom based at Toulouse. They expanded into Hispania, displacing the Suebi and Vandals, before Frankish forces under Clovis I defeated them at the Battle of Vouillé in 507, after which their kingdom consolidated in Spain and Portugal.

The tremissis was a small pure gold denomination introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by Emperor Theodosius I, representing a third of a solidus. Outside the Roman empire, tremisses were minted by several peoples, including the Visigoths, between the fifth and eighth centuries. This gold coin bears the obverse bust and legend of Libius Severus, "D N SEVER-VS P F AVG", while the reverse displays Victory supporting a long jewelled cross alongside the legend "VICTOR-I AVGGG".
