Historical context

The Visigoths were a Gothic people who entered the Roman Empire in 376 and established a kingdom based initially at Toulouse after settling as foederati in southern Gaul in 418. They subsequently expanded into Hispania, displacing other groups. Outside the Roman Empire, the Visigoths were among several peoples who minted gold tremisses between the fifth and eighth centuries.

The tremissis was a small pure gold denomination of Late Antiquity, introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by Emperor Theodosius I to represent a third of a solidus. This Visigothic issue carries imperial Roman motifs, displaying the bust and legend of Emperor Zeno, "D N ZENO - PERP AVG", alongside a reverse depicting a winged Victory supporting a long jewelled cross with the inscription "VICTORI-A AVGGG".
