Historical context

Zeno was Eastern Roman emperor from 474 to 475 and again from 476 to 491, stabilizing the Eastern empire amid domestic revolts and the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. After Odoacer deposed Romulus Augustulus, the imperial regalia were sent to Constantinople, leaving Zeno as the theoretical sole ruler of the reunified empire.
