Historical context
This gold coinage was produced under the authority of the emperor Zeno at the mint of Constantinople for the Roman Empire. Originating within the imperial monetary system, issues of this era continued established traditions of imperial representation while bearing Zeno's personal name and official titles, notably rendering the obverse inscription as "D N ZENO - PERP AVG".
The denomination is a tremissis, a small pure gold coin of Late Antiquity introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by Emperor Theodosius I. Valued at one third of a solidus, its name indicated a third of a unit and it originally weighed eight siliquae. Struck in gold, the piece displays a reverse design depicting Victory advancing with a wreath and a cross on a globe, accompanied by a star in the right field and the legend "VICTORIA AVGTSORIVM".
