Historical context

This gold tremissis was produced under the Roman emperor Zeno at the mint of Constantinople. Struck during the late antique period of the Roman Empire, the piece represents the imperial coinage issued under Zeno's authority in the eastern capital, bearing his obverse imperial style as "D N ZENO - PERP AVG".

The tremissis denomination was originally introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by the Emperor Theodosius I as a small coin of pure gold. Its name signified "a third of a unit", denoting its value as one third of a solidus. Roman tremisses were commonly minted through late antiquity and into the eighth century. This issue features a reverse design showing a winged Victory holding a long jewelled cross alongside the legend "VICTORI-A AVGGT".
