Historical context
Zeno was Eastern Roman emperor from 474 to 475 and again from 476 to 491, having initially ruled alongside his young son Leo II before reigning as sole emperor. Forced to flee Constantinople during a revolt in 475, he retook the capital in 476 and became theoretical sole ruler of a reunited empire when Odoacer deposed Romulus Augustulus and returned the imperial regalia. Constantinople had served as the Roman imperial capital since 330.
