Historical context

This silver coin was produced under the authority of the emperor Domitian within the Roman Empire, struck at the mint of Rome. The imperial coinage of this era formed part of the monetary system operating across the empire between 27 BC and AD 476, with Rome serving as the primary centre for imperial minting.

Struck as a denarius, the coin belonged to the principal silver denomination introduced during the Second Punic War around 211 BC and maintained as the standard Roman silver coin until the third century AD. The piece features the portrait of Domitia alongside the obverse legend "DOMITIA AVGVSTA IMP DOMIT". On the reverse, the coin portrays a peacock standing right, accompanied by the inscription "CONCORDIA AVGVST".
