Historical context

Domitian was Roman emperor from 81 to 96 and the final ruler of the Flavian dynasty, succeeding his father Vespasian and his elder brother Titus. His fifteen-year reign was marked by an authoritarian administration, which relied heavily on the support of the army and the Praetorian Guard while curtailing the power of the Senate. As part of his domestic policies, Domitian strengthened the Roman economy by revaluing the coinage and established a cult of personality, nominating himself perpetual censor. This silver denarius was struck at Rome during his imperial rule.
