Historical context
Domitian ruled as Roman emperor from 81 to 96, the final ruler of the Flavian dynasty following his father Vespasian and brother Titus. During his fifteen-year reign, he strengthened the imperial economy by revaluing the silver denarius and utilised religious, military, and cultural propaganda. In ancient Rome, the Secular Games (Ludi Saeculares) were religious celebrations of sacrifices and public games marking eras known as saecula, which emperors such as Domitian celebrated in AD 88.
