Historical context

Domitian ruled as Roman emperor from 81 to 96, following his father Vespasian and elder brother Titus as the final ruler of the Flavian dynasty. An authoritarian administrator, he curtailed the authority of the Senate while pursuing an extensive building programme in Rome and strengthening the economy by revaluing the imperial coinage. He also assumed the title of perpetual censor to oversee public morals. The as was a bronze, and later copper, denomination utilised throughout both the Republic and the Roman Empire.
