Historical context

This bronze sestertius was struck in the mint of Rome under the authority of the Roman emperor Domitian, during the period of the Roman Empire. It bears his imperial titles on the obverse legend: "IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM COS XVII CENS PER P P".

In the Roman Empire, the sestertius functioned as a denomination useful for commerce. Its name originated from its nominal value of two and a half asses, equivalent to one quarter of a denarius. The reverse of the coin portrays a two arch triumphal arch surmounted by a quadriga driven by two elephants, accompanied by the legend "S C".
