Historical context

This bronze dupondius was issued under the authority of the emperor Domitian within the Roman Empire from an uncertain mint.

The dupondius functioned as a coin valued at two asses, equivalent to half a sestertius or an eighth of a denarius from the reign of Augustus. At the height of the Roman Empire, a loaf of bread or a sextarius of wine cost approximately one dupondius. The denomination was normally distinguished from the similarly sized as by depicting the emperor wearing a radiate crown, a practice introduced under Nero in 66 AD. The reverse design features Roma seated left on a cuirass, holding a wreath and a parazonium with a shield placed behind, accompanied by the legend ROMA S C.
