Historical context

Titus Flavius Vespasianus ruled the Roman Empire from AD 79 until his death on 13 September 81. A member of the Flavian dynasty, he was the first Roman emperor to succeed his biological father, Vespasian. Before his accession, Titus achieved prominence as a military commander in Judaea, where he besieged and captured Jerusalem in AD 70, an achievement for which he was awarded a triumph in Rome.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver coinage. The obverse presents a laureate head of the emperor accompanied by the inscription "IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M". The reverse bears the legend "TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII P P" around an image depicting a female captive and a male captive seated back to back on either side of a trophy.
