Historical context

Titus ruled the Roman Empire from AD 79 until his death in AD 81, succeeding his father Vespasian as the first Roman emperor to follow his biological father. A member of the Flavian dynasty, his brief imperial reign followed a prominent military career, notably his service in Judaea, and was marked by events including the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 and a major fire in Rome in AD 80.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this coin represents the standard Roman silver denomination, the denarius. The reverse depicts a cuirassed elephant surrounded by the legend "TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII P P", recording his ninth tribunician power, fifteenth imperial acclamation, and eighth consulship.
