Historical context

Titus Flavius Vespasianus served as Roman emperor from AD 79 until his death on 13 September 81. A member of the Flavian dynasty, he was the first Roman emperor to succeed his biological father, Vespasian, who died on 23 June 79. Titus ruled from Rome during a brief reign marked by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 and a fire in Rome in AD 80.

Struck at Rome, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver coin originally introduced during the Second Punic War. The coin carries the obverse imperial titles "IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M" alongside the laureate head of the emperor, while the reverse inscription records his tribunician and consular offices as "TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII P P".
